Why Pilates?
Whether you have neck, back or pelvic pain, are tired of feeling stiff and inflexible, or are just looking to get stronger – improving strength and athletic performance, then a Pilates class at Lisburn Physiotherapy & Pilates is for you.
Pilates is a system of movement based exercises that focus on building strength, flexibility and lean muscle tone with an emphasis on lengthening the body and aligning the spine, rather than bulking and shortening muscles.
Pilates particularly focuses on the core and stabilising muscles in the body which protect the joints from injury and provides a stable framework for efficient movement to occur from.
Type of Class
We run two classes at Lisburn Physiotherapy & Pilates. Our Beginners Class is on a Tuesday evening at 7pm and taught by Sarah Godfrey. Pilates for Beginners will set the foundations to create strength, control and stability throughout the whole body. It is suitable for those new to Pilates, returning to exercise after injury, and people who are looking to exercise at a more gentle pace.
Our Intermediate Class is on a Thursday evening at 7pm, and taught by Kerry Sloan. This class is suitable for those already familiar with Pilates and the key elements involved. Intermediate Pilates is ideal for people who already have underlying fitness, and if you are looking for more of a challenge.
If at first you aren’t finding the Beginners classes challenging enough, you can switch to the Intermediate Class at any stage, and vice versa!
Each client will be asked to fill out a Pilates Questionnaire prior to their first class. If necessary one of our Physiotherapists will contact you to discuss any previous or current musculoskeletal injuries.
Why Pilates at Lisburn Physio?
Pilates is all about control and precision. Without close supervision and correction, often the exercises are performed poorly, using the wrong muscles. Pilates is often done in classes which are large, with no one ever checking or correcting your technique, leading to poor results, or even worse, injury.
At Lisburn Physiotherapy & Pilates we only believe in small classes which are always led by experienced Chartered Physiotherapists, trained in the Pilates method and skilled in movement correction and injury management. This will ensure you perform the exercises correctly, safely and get the best possible results from the effort that you put in.
What to expect
While you will certainly work hard and should feel more limber and stronger, Pilates is different from other forms of exercise in that it is not about getting your heart rate up or cracking a sweat. The classes are 1 hour long and always led by an experienced Physiotherapist
During Covid-19 restrictions we have been running our Pilates classes via Zoom. This means that you can exercise from the comfort of your own home.
